The English Riviera (2015)

‘Look out from the shores of Torbay and you’ll think you’re on the Mediterranean – it gives you this feeling. Sparkling blue waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, palm trees, entertainment galore, a mild climate all the year round – add a magnificent coastline with picturesque coves and sandy beaches, and you’ve got a holiday you’ll always remember.’

 P. A. Logan, Publicity Officer, Department of Leisure Services, Torquay

The English Riviera is a 22 mile stretch of outstanding South Devon coastline and was first referred to as the ‘English Riviera’ in Victorian times, thanks to visitors comparing it favourably to the French Riviera. It is one of the top places to holiday in the UK, although the standard has changed from the Victorian times.

Living close to the English Riviera, I was intrigued by the branding and marketing of this stretch of coast, especially as I have never heard of it before I moved to the South West on 2010.

In 2015 I decided to explore the English Riviera to find out what is left from its glory.
